Sylvia May Philips. Born 1931, daughter of Ivy May Philips and Thomas Philips of Ystrad Road, Ystrad. Rhondda. Confirmed into the Church at St Peters Church. Rhondda. Sylvia a short hand typist for the early years of her working life. Went on to work in the Elliot survival equipment factory, when she met her devoted husband Raymond, and got married to him in 1954. Then she worked in the Trafano Shoe factory in Dinas Isaf. For many years Sylvia pulled pints in Penrhiwfer Workingman’s Club, where she often lost her false nails in hurriedly pulled lagers and beers. Many a member thought there were crisps in the drinks. Apologies to them all!!! In 1955 (October, Ray insists on mentioning this, as they had then been married for 18 month??!!) their daughter Joy was born, Ray and Sylvia where astonished that this qualified them for two books of Green Shield stamps, and a bag of cough drops. Both Ray and his overworked wife spent many hours in their Caravan all over the UK, and were well known to members of the South Wales Caravan Club. And they both made many friends in those waterlogged fields. Dancing was a big interest for the “Gypsy Tango Queen”, and later on in life the hips slowed, so Line Dancing took over (but somehow Sylvia always managed to trip over the Pegs). Unfortunately, Parkinson’s disease took control, and she suffered not being able to get around much, Ray looked after her faultlessly and friends in Penrhiwfer took her out playing bingo, thanks to them all. We can remember Sylvia as a kind person, happy to help others, stubborn to a fault but forgiving (especially to a certain Englishman), a humorous lady who loved Kens dry jokes on Sunday mornings. And a loving Mam who will be missed by us all, especially,‘her little angel’ Molly, our beautiful Cavalier King Charles who she made great friends with during the last years. Finally, thanks Sylvia for all you have done for Ray, Joy, Keith, Wayne and Kyle, and thank you Dad for all you have done for Mam.
